Character Counts Football Event Benefits Truman Football Team

Taylor MI,  -  January 2007 was the first time Terry Grahl set foot in a women’s shelter after being asked to donate her decorating service by painting some walls.  This shelter was Grace Centers of Hope and since that day, over two years ago, Terry Grahl has dedicated her time and energy to transforming shelters for women and children into places of peace and possibilities with her nonprofit Enchanted Makeovers.  What Terry knew is if she used her decorating talents for the benefit of others it would be used as a catalyst to encourage others to give of their talents as well.

Through the power of the internet, Mark Marshall, came upon Terry’s website and read her story.   Mark related with Terry’s story and felt compelled to contact Terry, knowing she could offer support and information that could help his endeavors.  Drawing from his own personal experience as a young man, who gained much needed direction through sports, Mark, formed Champions of Character.  As the offensive coordinator of Truman High School football program, Mark, joined by fellow coach, Jeff Morrow, witnesses first-hand the great potential within players who face social and economical challenges.

With much desire, passion and support from head coach, Bob Rowe, Champions of Character uses football to form an armor of character and values to be worn by these young men for a lifetime.  Their vision is to create an atmosphere that supports and allows our team members to achieve their full potential. We will use the game of football to develop the values of leadership, discipline, sportsmanship and character among our team.  We will strive to build young men who will grow into strong teammates, grateful sons, loyal brothers, faithful husbands, and loving fathers.

What Terry and Mark both know is that prevention is the key to breaking the cycle of conditions that lead to homelessness.   Terry’s work at Grace Centers of Hope allowed her to connect Mark with their men’s program leader.  As a result, Champions of Character program will team up the Men of Grace Centers of Hope* with Truman football players to share a game of flag football, a meal offered by the Northline Baptist congregation, and messages of triumph over difficult circumstances.

When:  August 1st— 12:00 PM
Where:  Taylor Sportsplex & Northline Baptist

The following organizations are honored to provide support to the Champions of Character Program with a future of helping many more young men:  Grace Centers of Hope, Enchanted Makeovers, & Northline Baptist Church.
* Men of Grace Centers of Hope are men that have dealt with homelessness, addiction and other life challenges.  They will share how they’ve dealt with their challenges and are living happy and productive lives.

This story isn’t about decorating and football.  This story is about using the gift of creating beautiful surroundings and the gift of coaching to stop the cycle of abuse and neglect that can lead to homelessness.
